Phoenix Arizona is one of the hottest places in the country with highs over 122 record setting degrees in the shade. Heat indexing can make the temperature feel as high as 140 degrees in full sun. Take it from me I have worked in the hvac business for years and when I have had to work on a roof or in an attic I can tell you it’s hot! 

One would think that homes in different climates would be built more suitable for their climate. Wouldn’t they? Well unfortunately the building code is a standard for all climates unless local codes write new standards. I have found that most homes in the Phoenix area only meet the national building code. This means that almost all homes in the Valley suffer from poor design especially when it comes to ventilation – the “V “in HVAC. 

Attics are much hotter than they should be. This causes more heat gain to the home through higher ceiling temperatures and duct temperatures. There are basically 2 ways to combat this.

One is to exhaust the hot air and replace with cooler ambient air in the attic as much as possible, and two, “shade” the area from direct radiation heat gain.

Ventilation can be accomplished by different means but the most effective is by using a powered fan. I prefer a solar powered fan because they last longer and use no energy from the home and are wireless. During the day when the sun is out a photovoltaic solar panel will convert sunlight into 12 volt electrical power that will drive the 12 volt fan motor. The fan will continue to operate as long as the sun is out.

There is a hybrid fan that uses both solar and wind to ventilate sort of a whirly bird/solar fan as well.

Sometimes the biggest cause for poor ventilation is that the soffit vent or bird hole vents have been blocked with insulation preventing air from getting into the attic or that there just aren’t enough. Attics are designed to ventilate by using convection. If the outdoor temperature was 105 degrees at the intake soffit vents in the lowest part of the attic than the air in the attic would be heated from the sun shining on the roof. This heated air would than rise up to the top of the attic where it would than exit the attic through a vent or an exhaust fan. The more air moving through the attic the lower the temperature will be. The second way to keep the attic from heating up is to shade, block or reflect the radiant energy from the sun.

Do you ever notice that on a colder day in Phoenix Arizona when you park your car wind up the windows then you return to your car later and its hot inside? That’s the radiant heat.

The incentives will offset the cost by as much as 80%. Federal tax credits are 30% of the total installed costs. Arizona has a $1000 state tax credit. The utilities both gas and electric companies have rebates based on the designed performance of the system. Rebates can be as much as $3000 or commercially a yearly production credit with no limit.

There are other tax advantages for home office and commercial use.  With 322 days of sun a year on average as much as 50% or more of your hot water can be heated by the sun. The technology behind solar water heating has not changed much in the last 40 years. The operation is simple and very efficient. Water is heated directly from the sun unlike solar electric which has to be converted into power with losses.

Typical systems are designed to last 30 years or more. The standard warranty for the industry is 10 years.

Solar water heating systems in Phoenix Arizona require very little maintenance and perform better here than anywhere else. Solar pool heating is another way to harness that Phoenix sunshine. Swimming pools can be 82 degrees from March through October, extending the swim season by nearly 4 months or more. It’s as simple as redirecting the circulating water from the pool pump to a panel on the roof heating it and then returning it back to the pool.
